Why Do 3D Light Decorations Attract So Much Attention?

An illuminated sculpture in a public square, a giant animal in a garden or a glowing arch at the entrance to an event: some installations naturally make people stop and take a closer look. Their appeal goes beyond their size or brightness. Their three-dimensional design changes the way visitors experience a space.

3D light decorations become part of their surroundings and can be enjoyed from different perspectives. They can create a focal point, guide visitors along a route or help tell a story. The key is choosing the right design and finding the best location for it. So, what makes these installations different, and how can they enhance your next lighting project?

3D Light Decorations: What Does the Third Dimension Add?

Unlike a 2D illuminated motif, which is mainly designed to be viewed from the front, a three-dimensional light decoration has depth. Visitors can admire it from the side, up close or from a distance, discovering a different perspective as they move around it.

This does not mean that 3D decorations are always the better option. Flat illuminated motifs are ideal for decorating façades, lampposts or overhead street displays. A three-dimensional structure, meanwhile, can become the centrepiece of a display, highlight an entrance or enhance a visitor route.

Both formats complement each other and can be combined within the same project.

A Focal Point That Complements Its Surroundings

An illuminated sculpture can change the way people experience a space without altering its architecture.

In a large public square, it catches the eye from a distance. Along a pathway, it creates an unexpected moment of discovery. Outside a venue, it welcomes visitors and helps set the atmosphere from the moment they arrive.

Getting the proportions right is essential.

A monumental installation may work beautifully in a spacious setting but feel overwhelming in a small courtyard. Conversely, a more discreet creation can make a strong impression through its shapes and details.

The aim is not to fill as much space as possible, but to find the right proportions to enhance the location.

Discovering Light from a Different Perspective

Three-dimensional light installations come in many forms, each with its own characteristics and purpose.

Illuminated Sculptures: Giving a Space Its Own Identity

Characters, animals, flowers, geometric shapes or symbolic objects: illuminated sculptures open up a wide range of creative possibilities.

They are particularly effective when the aim is to create a striking visual feature that gives a location a distinctive identity.

Their positioning should allow visitors to appreciate their three-dimensional design and, where possible, walk around them.

The surrounding environment also matters. A sculpture may look impressive from the front but appear quite different when viewed from the side.

Its design should therefore consider the various viewpoints from which visitors will experience the installation.

Illuminated Arches and Light Tunnels: Guiding the Visitor Experience

An illuminated arch can highlight an entrance, announce an event or create a transition between two areas.

A light tunnel offers a different experience, inviting visitors to walk through the structure and discover the lighting from within.

These installations add another dimension to illuminated routes by combining decoration with movement.

However, their design requires careful consideration of pedestrian circulation.

Passage width, available height, accessibility and any required access routes must all be assessed to ensure the installation suits its location.

Photo Opportunities and Custom Light Installations: Telling a Story

Some illuminated structures are designed specifically to create memorable photo opportunities. Others are developed to represent a symbol, celebrate a tradition or reflect a brand's identity.

For photo installations, positioning and available viewing distance are important. Visitors should have enough space to take pictures comfortably, with an attractive background.

With a bespoke light installation, the creative process begins with the message or story the project aims to communicate.

Shapes, dimensions, colours and finishes are then selected to bring that idea to life.

Each project becomes an opportunity to create a distinctive lighting display.

How to Integrate 3D Light Decorations into Your Space?

A successful light installation is about more than its appearance.

To ensure a decoration fits naturally into its surroundings, it is important to consider where it will be installed and how the space will be used.

Plan the Location and Technical Requirements

Before selecting a structure, several practical questions can help shape the project:

  • Visibility: From which viewpoints will visitors see the decoration?
  • Circulation: Will pedestrian routes and essential access points remain clear?
  • Installation: What are the requirements for anchoring, stability and electrical connections?
  • Maintenance: How will the structure be maintained, and what weather conditions must it withstand?

These considerations may seem secondary to the creative side of a project. Yet they are essential to a successful installation.

Addressing them early makes it easier to choose the right solution and avoid more complex adjustments later.

Consider the Installation by Day and by Night

An illuminated structure remains visible even when its lights are switched off.

During the day, its silhouette, materials and colours contribute to the atmosphere of the location. After dark, the lighting highlights its contours, reveals its shapes and gives it a different appearance.

Both experiences are worth considering from the design stage.

With its e-deco line, Leblanc illuminations also explores the possibilities of 3D printing to create colourful, customisable decorative elements.

Think About How the Decoration Will Be Used Over Time

The duration and frequency of use are equally important.

Depending on the project, requirements may vary:

  • Temporary installations: Assembly and dismantling should be planned in advance.
  • Reusable decorations: Transport, storage and maintenance need to be considered.
  • Adaptable displays: Some elements may be replaced or modified for future events.

Thinking about these aspects from the outset helps ensure the design remains consistent with its intended use.

Mexico City: How 3D Light Decorations Bring a Tradition to Life

Three-dimensional illuminated structures can also celebrate cultural symbols and contribute to major public events.

One example is the project delivered by Leblanc Illuminations in Mexico City in 2025 for Día de Muertos, the Day of the Dead.

For this celebration, Paseo de la Reforma, one of the city's main avenues, featured an extensive lighting installation inspired by Mexican traditions.

The project brought together 1,430 decorations across more than 14 kilometres, including 800 suspended 3D decorations and 90 3D flowers.

Designs inspired by Mexican culture

Among the many elements created for this project, cempasúchil flowers played a particularly important role.

Recognised for their vibrant orange colour, these marigolds are among the most meaningful symbols of Día de Muertos.

Recreating them as illuminated decorations required careful attention to their shapes and colours to respect their cultural significance.

The Leblanc Illuminations teams worked on both the creative and technical aspects of the project, taking its cultural identity and the requirements of a large-scale installation into account.

This project illustrates how three-dimensional lighting displays can celebrate a tradition while creating a striking visual atmosphere across an entire city.

FAQ

What is the difference between a 2D and a 3D light display?

A 2D light display is primarily flat and designed to be viewed from the front. A 3D light display has depth and can be viewed from different angles. Both formats can be combined in the same project.

What types of 3D light installations are available?

These include light sculptures, arches, tunnels, photographic installations, and custom designs. The choice depends on the venue and the desired effect.

Can a 3D light structure be installed outdoors?

Yes, provided it is designed for that purpose. Weather conditions, stability, anchoring, and power supply must be taken into account when planning the project.

Are 3D light displays only for Christmas?

No. They can be used for a wide range of celebrations, cultural events, retail promotions, or projects to enhance spaces throughout the year.

Can a 3D light display be customized?

Yes. Depending on design and manufacturing capabilities, the shapes, dimensions, colors, and finishes can be tailored to the identity of the venue or event.
